Mark Khaisman’s Tape Art

Written by Myra on August 31, 2008 – 3:14 pm -

Mark Khaisman is a mixed media artist who works with translucent brown tape. He works with layering tape over each other to darken the colors for his pieces. The final product looks pretty mesmerizing, especially when places behind lights.

Here are some samples of his work:

Treeson Vinyl Figure

Written by Myra on August 30, 2008 – 2:26 pm -

Treeson is the creation of Bubi Au Yeung, an illustrator from Hong Kong. Treeson is about a type of creature that has been raised by forest trees. A boy, Ren discovers Treeson and they both form a bond.

Treeson has been made into a web comic, vinyl figure and book! For the vinyl figures, there are currently 4 different types of Treeson toys. They vary from Treeson, Firefly Treeson, Urban Treeson and Baby Treeson. All of these figures have been manufactured by Crazy Label.

There are also a lot of fans on Flickr who posts up their Treeson photographs. Here’s a really cute one that I found:

Vinyl Figures and the Mainstream Market

Written by Myra on August 21, 2008 – 9:21 pm -

What do you think about the Simpson Vinyls from Kid Robot? I have much respect for the Simpsons, but personally, vinyl figures? Is that right? They don’t look that bad, but I have a feeling that they are just trying to commercialize their cartoon show. Maybe the mixtures between the mainstream cartoon and the more somewhat underground vinyl figures are making me a tad uneasy.

If other mainstream cartoons, even popular musicians start trying to cash into these vinyl figures, won’t it dilute the whole industry a bit? Vinyl figures would start profiting more, but what about the value? Non-exsistent? There is simply no value if vinyl figures are produced solely for making money. What about the artists that are currently releasing vinyl figures for the love of it? Would they be pushed out of being able to release these vinyl figures because the masses would prefer something else?
